Despite the stupidity of the original US lead attack , there can be no withdrawal from Iraq until the job is done . Otherwise we will have another Afghanistan and more bombers .
A reality is that organisations such as Amnesty International are more effective in dealing with these issues than the " bleeding hearts " ( which we also support ) .
Meanwhile more die in Africa in a day than Al Qaeda is ever likely to kill , thanks to murderous politicians such as Robert Mugabe and indifference .

I have read the powerful and eloquent letter sent to you by one (of) my distinguished predecessors as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Jack Vessey. I fully endorse in tone and tint his powerful argument. The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism. To redefine Common Article 3 would add to those doubts. Furthermore, it would put our own troops at risk.
I am as familiar with The Armed Forces Officer as is Jack Vessey. It was written after all the horrors World War II and General George C. Marshall, then Secretary of Defense, used it to tell the world and to remind our soldiers of our moral obligations with respect to those in our custody.

The Australian hostage Douglas Wood has been freed in Iraq . This may not have happened by accident and has several lessons . Firstly , the Wood family were rational and intelligent in their approach . Secondly , the Australian government was decisive , particularly in it's refusal to negotiate a ransom or to have Australian forces leave Iraq . It approved the use of force . The final element was the presence in Iraq of the leader of Australian Muslims .

The Schapelle Corby drugs case on the Island of Bali in Indonesia has not attracted much international attention . However , it is the main topic in Australian media , much of this material is emotional and uninformed . Her defence team has been at fault in attacking the local justice system , rather than establishing her innocence . Shapelle was on trial not Indonesia . Many aspects of this case just do not add up , lets hope the truth comes during the appeal process . We oppose capital punishment , do not regard " pot " as seriously as other class 1 drugs , and if she did do it , return her to Australia for a reasonable time in prison , maybe with a stopover in Singapore for a few cane strokes .
Finally , we hope that Australian Government support will , in future , be equally available to all citizens in similar circumstances , including those at Guantanamo Bay .

Capital Punishment and Drugs
Strange as it may seem , Spankoz strongly opposes Capital Punishment in ALL cases . Our reasons include those of Amnesty International ;

Death Penalty
" The death penalty is the ultimate cruel , inhuman and degrading
punishment . It violates the right to life . It is irrevocable and can be
inflicted on the innocent and has never been shown to deter crime more
effectively than other punishments . "
These words are here because of the case of Ngyuen Tuong Van ( see : Singapore to hang Australian courier etc . )
We join with many other Australians in asking the Singaporean Government to reconsider their decision . This request also applies to cases in other countries in the region ( and to the US in non drug cases , for that matter ) .
So long as the local justice system is fair , there is no reason for these countries to treat Westerners any differently to locals . By all means cane these criminals , regardless of sex , and keep them in the local hell holes that pass for prisons for a major part of their sentence before transferring them to Australian jails , etc. .
Note : As of 2 December , 2005 we no longer have any dealings with residents of Singapore ( be they Private or Corporate ) .

FIFA must act now to correct poor refereeing decisions . In the case in point , the best available referee should have been appointed , without regard to nationality or political correctness . No one is perfect , nor can they see everything that happens on the field . Multi camera instant video replay is available within seconds , as is currently used in Australia with other football codes . Malaysia's former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has admitted that he's considered the possibility of becoming the next Secretary-General of the United Nations after Kofi Annan retires . His name has come up repeatedly in international circles , as a moderate Muslim candidate from Asia . But he says he's not actively seeking the post , because he feels that doing so would compromise his freedom to speak out on important international questions .

BATTLE OF LONG TAN
Forty years ago today ( 18 August ) a battle took place in a rubber plantation near the Vietnamese village of Long Tan . An Australian infantry company of just over 100 men had inadvertently stumbled into an enemy force of some 2,500 . The Australians held their position that rainy night and by the next day had killed an estimated 1,000 of the attacking force . Sixty six years and one day earlier a similar defeat was inflicted upon another enemy at The Seige of Elands River Post in South Africa . Yet this was just another Battle in a long list of " against the odds " successes by Australian forces , including ANZAC COVE , BEERSHEBA , HAMEL , TOBRUK , MILNE BAY and KAPYONG .
It is time that these , and all , War Veterans be properly looked after by the Australian Government . Some of the wrongs of almost forty years can be put right , despite what a Prime Minister may say .
In passing , it is worth noting that Australia is the only country in the world to have fought alongside the United States in every conflict from , and including WW I .
Amongst other things , he brought sense into Australian Censorship .
ASYLUM SEEKERS
We welcome the decision not to proceed with this Bill and congratulate the Members and Senators that stood against it . ( See : Australia PM withdraws bill restricting asylum seekers arriving on ... ) . Australia needs to think long and hard about Indonesia and West Papua . In particular , Australia could assist Indonesia in many areas which would assist the Indonesian people , continue to stop unplanned migration , and see some form of self determination for West Papua ( who's history is not unlike that of East Timor ) .

What if the UN force in Lebanon is oversubscribed ? What if this force achieves it's mission ? What if a similar force was deployed to Gaza ?
RADICAL ISLAM
Radical Islam can be defeated , but not by increased security alone . It must be attacked at it's roots . We , in the " West " , must think of what we stand for , what we are prepared to fight for and what , if necessary to die for ( as happened globally twice last century ) . Radical Islam is an abomination , but as with any philosophy it can be countered with another philosophy , which we believe to be superior . To continue to increase security alone will mean always being one step behind , countering the latest threat . We can not afford to wait for moderate Islam to fight this threat alone . The most effective weapon is this conflict is education , free public education in areas where the radicals and now ensconced , this may be done as a part of foreign aid . Education means that men and women learn to think for themselves and , in time , governments may have to change or be replaced . We should lead by example and teach not preach .

We have never supported G.W. Bush , but he is neither standing for election nor being impeached . Please do not vote for those who have supported Bush's more outrageous policies .
In other words , having regard to what candidates otherwise have done ( or could do ) for their constituencies , vote for the best candidate , regardless of their Party .
CHURCH AND STATE
In the past days the Senior Muslim Cleric in Australia has again attacked the status of women and democracy . Across the sea , the Church of Rome orchestrates a similar attack in Nicaragua . By all means teach ethics , morals etc , but do not try to impose " religious " standards on other members of society .

The rather foolish Australian David Hicks represents the sham of Guantanamo Bay and should be brought home now . ( We have been saying this for months and at last it is happening !

The Japanese are at it again at the IWC . It is about time that all whales are placed out of bounds ( we can live with the odd one taken by traditional methods by " native " peoples ) . BUT , as far as we are concerned , the use of the Australian Navy ( in lieu of a Coast Guard , in Australian waters ) is a refreshing proposal .

As the USS Kitty Hawk ( CV-63 ) again visits Sydney , it is worth while remembering the visit of another US Aircraft Carrier some 40 years ago and Sandra Hilder , a 19 year old local who later stowed away in an Admiral's Cabin .
She did finally make it to the US to be spanked by her sailor friend . ( It is fortunate for Paris Hilton that times have changed . )
This site is about Consensual Adult Spanking and we are sick of receiving news " alerts " about " spanking " which have nothing to do with spanking . The latest series concerns the aftermath of a case in New Zealand where a child was beaten leaving bruises from neck to ankles . The trial Judge released the pictures , which were shown on Australian television , we have seen them but somehow they do not appear on internet news services . It is about time that these assaults are labelled as such , they are not " spankings " .

Australia already confiscates Indonesian and other vessels for illegal fishing in Australian protected waters . Not to mention the environmental effects of these activities .
Enough of this so called " War on Terror " !
Finally , the Australian government has reversed the mistake of a few years ago and is doubling the SAS ( Special Air Service Regiment ) deployment to Afghanistan to finish the task of the destruction in detail of the Taliban leadership . Unlike the situation in Iraq , there is a clear requirement for this action and it is supported by both sides of local politics and the population . The SAS tactical approach differs from that of other forces , this has resulted in a " kill rate " some three times higher than these other forces in Afghanistan .
One can only wonder what difference the present " Troop Surge " in Iraq would have made to the War in Afghanistan . ( It would have doubled the fighting force committed to Afghanistan . )
We opposed the Iraq invasion for reasons which have been shown to be correct . However , there can be no withdrawal under fire , militarily there is no choice but to stay in Iraq until the Iraqi forces have been trained to do the job themselves . This means the promised training and equipment has to be delivered on time , NOT as is happening now .
Still two fundamental errors are being made , " terrorists " are prepared to wait for many years and be absolutely ruthless to achieve their aims . Secondarily , " terrorists " are not driven by some blind hatred of the West , it is from what has happened , as a result of Western intervention , throughout the Middle East over at least the past 90 years .
Again , our thoughts are with Britain this summer .
The Dr. Haneef Terrorism Case is concerning for many reasons . We are waiting until the FULL story is available . There are suspicions about the Australian Government's actions and the Dr. may have some more explaining to do .
Certainly , this incident is going to cause debate and change in the present system .
